Fresh Water and Salt Water Swimming Pools, The Pros and Cons

By Bryce Sendefer

Some pool owners think one type of pool is better than the others. Houston Pool Service cares for both types.

The pros of having a salt-water pool are thus:

Initially, salt water pools are more expensive. However, after that you don't have to add chlorine as the salt does that for you.

Salt water is much softer on your skin than fresh water

Newer salt systems have replaced the old systems and now can actually monitor as well as clean themselves.

A salt water pool alleviates the need to use toxic chemicals, which means you don't have to store or handle them. Houston Pool Service often reminds those with chlorine allergies of this fact.

Salt water pools alleviate burning eyes. They are not chlorine free as they utilize a chlorine generator. But this does keep pool owners from having to add chlorine manually. Salt water pools are also free of chloramines, which is what irritates the eyes and produces the intense chlorine smell.

Salt water pool won't fade your swimsuits like freshwater.

It's considered eco-friendly and also non-toxic.

Either/or:

The salt water system will create various disinfection by products, however so do the fresh water pools.

Both types of pools are sensitive to rain and sunlight. Rain running into the pool can reduce the amount of chlorine. The sun can also burn off chlorine, according to Houston Pool Service.

A salt-water pool is highly dependent on usage, but so is a fresh water pool. This means that a heavy bathing load will change the salt required, or in the case of a fresh water pool, the amount of chlorine needed.

Houston Pool Service reminds us that both types of pools need to be tested and maintained regularly.

Cons:

Below are some of the cons of salt water pools as found by Houston Pool Cleaning:

Splashed or spilled salt water can leave a salt residue when it dries. However, it's typically very easy to wash off.

Salt can be corrosive and can damage low grade metals or even stone.

The initial, up front cost of a salt water pool is substantially higher than fresh water systems.

Salt is 60% cloride and 40% sodium. Devices in salt water pools create a chemical reaction to manufacture chlorine. Some people feel that the created sodium hypochlorite chlorine is dangerous for use around people.

The saltwater chlorinator will not produce sufficient chlorine in a small phase of time, thus it is possible for algae to actually grow exponentially.
